Corporate Social Responsibility

We aim to make corporate social responsibility a part of what we do every day for a living, but in addition the partners and staff at Hickman & Rose support a range of groups in the wider community which reflects our commitment to justice.

Ben Rose founded Youth at Risk in 1989 when he first started to practice criminal law and realised that formal justice is not always enough. Youth at Risk is a charity dedicated to helping young people who face desperately difficult challenges in finding a productive path through life. Its supporters include the former Lord Chief Justices Lord Woolf of Barnes and Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers. It has now helped thousands of young people with outstanding results both in the UK and in challenging environments such as Bosnia and Palestine. Among its recent major successes was the production of Romeo and Juliet by the Birmingham Royal Ballet using dancers drawn from ordinary young people involved in Youth at Risk, filmed and broadcast by Channel 4. Everyone who comes into contact with Youth at Risk is moved by the deep commitment of those work with it.

Ben Rose and Daniel Machover jointly founded Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights in 1988. Daniel Machover remains a member of LPHR and has undertaken significant amounts of pro bono work for Palestinian clients. Daniel now also chairs Inquest, the charity which supports those whose relatives have died at the hands of the state.

Jane Hickman is Secretary of the Criminal Appeal Lawyers Association, which works to improve law and procedure for those who suffer miscarriages of justice. She also currently supports the Childrens Legal Centre and Youth Justice Support Uganda, two charities committed to upholding the rights of young people in different countries around the world, with pro bono financial and business advice.

Ross Dixon has recently stepped down after three years on the Committee of Hackney CAB.

Many of the solicitors at Hickman & Rose work to integrate their cases strategically into the wider search for social and legal justice. Anna Mazzola works tirelessly to ensure that victims of domestic violence and forced marriage are given sufficient priority by the police and CPS, and that there is a clearer policy on protecting victims of crime who are at risk from reprisals. Kate Maynard is dedicated to the struggle for international justice for victims of crime.
