Kate Maynard
Profile:
Kate Maynard is a solicitor in the civil litigation department. She joined the firm in September 2001 and qualified in July 2004.
Kate specialises in civil actions against the Ministry of Justice and police, representing bereaved families at inquests into deaths in custody, defending injunctions brought against protesters, miscarriage of justice compensation claims and assisting victims of torture and war crimes to obtain justice under the legal principle of universal jurisdiction. She also specialises in public law work, where the challenges relate to her practice areas.
Kate has recently acted for a group of 18 prisoners who brought civil proceedings against the Ministry of Justice for assaults, race discrimination, victimisation and harassment at HMP Leeds. She currently acts for two bereaved families in respect of deaths in custody in HMP Leeds, and a prison visitor who alleges that he was assaulted by staff.
She also currently acts for two individuals who have been injuncted by Oxford University in relation to their new animal research laboratory.
With Daniel Machover, Kate obtained a warrant for suspected war crimes under the Geneva Conventions Act 1957, for the arrest of Israeli army officer Doron Almog. Doron Almog was the commander of the Gaza Strip from 2000-2003. Kate and Daniel have published articles about this work in the Denning Law Review (Prosecuting alleged Israeli war criminals in England and Wales [2006] Denning LJ ) and the Times Law Reports (The UK’s duty to ‘universal jurisdiction’, 4 October 2005). Kate continues to act for victims of torture and war crimes from various jurisdictions.
