Civil law
- Prisoners’ Rights and Public Law
We have one of the country’s leading prisoners’ rights teams, led by Daniel Machover and Liz Sutcliffe. The team has taken a number of significant judicial review cases. - Actions against Prisons
Headed by Daniel Machover, we have a substantial number of cases involving allegations of brutality in prisons. Our work led to the very rare incidence of prison officers from Wormwood Scrubs being convicted of assault on prisoners. We have made successful claims for compensation in many cases of assault and continue to be the leading firm in this field. - Actions against Police
We have an extremely successful and experienced team dealing with both small and very high profile claims against the police. All the firm’s practitioners in this field are members of the Police Action Lawyers’ Group. Our team has a high success rate, securing very favourable settlements for clients who have suffered abuses at the hands of police and prison officers.
- Compensation for Miscarriages of
Justice
Nogah Ofer is one of the few specialists in the country in claims against the Home Office for compensation for victims of miscarriages of justice and was the solicitor for Michael O'Brien in his ground-breaking case against the Home Office Assessor. - Deaths in Custody
Daniel Machover, Nogah Ofer, Kate Maynard and Beth Handley are experts in inquest law. They represent bereaved families at inquests following deaths in police and prison custody, and have experience of challenging coroners’ decisions in the High Court. We are currently working on high profile deaths in custody across the country, including in Rye Hill, Belmarsh Wandsworth and Leeds prisons and the police shooting of Azelle Rodney in north London. - Confiscation Orders
We deal with orders made or sought by the Crown under the Drug Trafficking Act and other confiscation provisions. - Human Rights
We maintain within the firm a very high level of expertise in relation to Human Rights issues under the leadership of Daniel Machover. Daniel holds an LL.M. in International Human Rights Law, and has many years of experience in this area.Kate Maynard and Daniel Machover are working with international NGOs and human rights organisations in a number of countries to secure the arrest and prosecution of persons in the UK who are suspected of committing serious human rights abuses abroad, including torture and war crimes. - Discrimination Law
We are one of the few firms with specialist skills in dealing with discrimination within the criminal justice system with clients bringing claims under the new Race Relations (Amendment) Act for discrimination at the hands of prison officers and police. One of our successes was an award of damages for a prisoner detained in Brixton Prison who was told to “go back to Africa” and whose case partly lead to the CRE inquiry into racism in the Prison Service. We recently settled discrimination claims for 16 clients against Leeds prison.
