Daniel Machover comments on missing evidence from Kelso Cochrane murder file

21 Jul 2024

Head of Civil Litigation Daniel Machover has been quoted in a Guardian article about efforts to reveal the truth about what has been called “modern Britain’s first racist murder”: the killing of Kelso Cochrane.

Journalist Mark Olden’s opinion piece sets out the efforts he and Kelso Cochrane’s family have made to uncover the truth about the death. Daniel represents the family and is quoted in relation to the extensive use of Freedom of Information law to secure access to the archived Met Police’s criminal investigation, following which no one was ever charged.

Rebuffed at first, the family’s FoI efforts ultimately succeeded and revealed significant details about the killing, including some shocking details about the prime suspects.

As well as expressing concern about the failures in the investigation, Daniel and the family have questioned the appropriateness of the MPS refusing access to the papers for so long, given what appears to have been missing from the file at the point The National Archives took charge of them.

The missing evidence, which includes ID photos of the suspects and evidence of the photo identification of one of the key suspects, means that for many years it has been “highly unlikely any charges would ever be brought”.
