15 Mar 2022
Civil Litigation solicitor Helen Stone has been quoted in the media following the IOPC’s decision to pursue a criminal investigation of a police officer involved in the death of Sean Fitzgerald three years ago.
Mr Fitzgerald died after being shot in the chest during a pre-planned police operation in 2019. He was unarmed. Having previously declared there would be no criminal investigation of the officer concerned, the IOPC has now ‘revisited’ this decision.
Helen, who represents Mr Fitzgerald’s brother, welcomed the IOPC’s decision as a ‘positive development’.
She said she ‘trust[s]… the IOPC will act swiftly to complete their investigation in a robust manner and in close coordination with the Crown Prosecution Service to ensure there is no delay in reaching a charging decision.
