Hickman & Rose are delighted to announce that Kate Maynard, Beth Handley and Anna Mazzola have been appointed as Partners in the Civil Litigation Department.
Kate Maynard acts for victims of torture and war crimes committed in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and other jurisdictions. She also specialises in prison law and on 20 November 2009, the Court of Appeal backed her client’s claim that prison officers could be treated as the prosecutors in a malicious prosecution case. In September 2009, another client won at trial against the Ministry of Justice for assault by prison officers at Parkhurst prison. She also acts for Andre Hanscombe in his quest for justice and accountability from the Metropolitan Police in respect of their bungled investigations of the offences committed by Robert Napper.
Beth Handley predominantly acts for individuals, including protesters, seeking to uphold their rights and claim compensation for state wrongdoing. She has also successfully represented protesters facing injunction proceedings brought against them by private companies under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. Her clients include some of the passengers on the coaches bound for Fairford military base to protest the UK’s military invasion of Iraq on 22 March 2003, who were forcibly returned to London under police escort. Beth and Anna have recently been successful in obtaining damages and a declaration for a group of animal rights protesters repeatedly unlawfully arrested in breach of Articles 10 and 11 ECHR.
Anna Mazzola specialises in public law, privacy and data protection issues and on assisting victims of crime, including the families of murdered French students, Guy Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez and the parents of the little girl abused by paedophile Craig Sweeney. She is featured in Chambers Guide 2010 as “a rising star at the practice … leading the firm’s work on police surveillance issues” and “an active and talented practitioner”.
They will join the head of the civil department, Daniel Machover, in building the firm’s reputation for its international and UK work in human rights law.
