Firm praises “exceptionally intelligent and strategic lawyer” at the core of Hickman & Rose success story

Jane Hickman, co-founder of leading white collar crime boutique firm Hickman & Rose, is retiring from her day-to-day role.

Ms Hickman is one of the UK’s pre-eminent criminal lawyers, rated as a ‘Leader’ in General Crime by leading legal directories Chambers and Legal 500.

She founded Hickman & Rose with fellow criminal law expert Ben Rose in 1991. Becoming Managing Partner in 1995, she was a driving force in building a top boutique firm that combined a high-quality close-knit legal team with strategic use of IT, rigorous quality controls and robust systems.

Jane Hickman started her career at North Kensington Law Centre in the 1970s and became a noted female voice in the profession. She was one of the founders of Rights of Women and of North Kensington Women’s Aid, and went on to chair a number of community organisations including Brixton Community Law Centre and Women’s Education in Building. In the 1980s she acted as the lawyer for Greenham Common women’s peace camp, initiating and conducting litigation in the US courts against President Reagan.

As a result of her experiences as a community activist she developed a keen interest in how to get things done through effective leadership and the creation of a positive culture, shared by her co-founder Ben Rose. In 2000 she received an MBA in law firm management, and later went on to serve as a Commissioner with the Legal Services Commission. Her primary enthusiasm however remained on her client work, ranging from serious criminal appeals to complex advice on private client matters. Her rigorous approach to legal analysis and her passion for ensuring clients are properly heard, understood and served has imbued the culture at Hickman & Rose.

The firm will continue to be led by an experienced team of partners including Ben Rose, Ross Dixon, the new Chair of Partners, Daniel Machover and Jenny Wiltshire. Ms Hickman remains a consultant and will continue to coach and provide internal training on strategic planning, quality of service and various legal issues.

Ben Rose, Hickman & Rose’s other founding partner said: “Jane is one of the most remarkable women I know; fiercely loyal to her clients, to the rule of law, and honest and honourable to her core. We have had the most extraordinarily creative partnership. Whilst she will continue to work with Hickman & Rose as a consultant, I will miss her partnership.”

Ross Dixon, Chair of Partners at Hickman & Rose, added: “Jane is an exceptionally intelligent and strategic lawyer who has led Hickman & Rose with insight and integrity. Her unwavering commitment to her clients and to work of the best possible quality are key values she has embedded throughout the firm. To have had the good fortune to work with Jane for many years has been an invaluable education, a privilege and a great pleasure.”
