Hickman & Rose client Carlo Palombo’s six year battle to overturn his criminal conviction for a EURIBOR related fraud offence has made it all the way to the Supreme Court.
Over three days this week the Supreme Court will determine whether Carlo’s behaviour – and that of Tom Hayes, whose LIBOR-related conviction is also being appealed – was criminal.
Former Barclays trader Carlo Palombo was convicted of fraud in 2019 in relation to the submission of EURIBOR interest rates. In 2023, the Criminal Cases Review Commission referred his case back to the Court of Appeal, citing the different approach to alleged LIBOR manipulation taken by the US courts.
While the Court of Appeal dismissed Carlo and Tom’s appeal, it certified this decision involved a point of law of sufficient general public importance to be determined by the Supreme Court.
