IOPC announce rare re-investigation in Darren Cumberbatch case

29 Jul 2022

Kate Maynard has featured in the media following the Independent Office for Police Conduct’s announcement that it will re-investigate the case of Darren Cumberbatch, who died after contact with the police

Darren, a 32-year-old electrician, died of multiple organ failure nine days after he was punched, beaten with a baton and Tasered by Warwickshire police offices.

The IOPC’s rare decision to re-investigate some elements of the 2017 case comes after sustained legal pressure from Darren’s family, and marks a significant step forward in their quest for justice.

Hickman & Rose partner Kate Maynard, who represents Darren’s family, was quoted in the media saying that she has long been concerned about the lack of scrutiny of the officers who used force on Darren.
