Peter Csemiczky in the Times on university sexual misconduct proceedings
9 Jan 2025
Peter Csemiczky has written an article for the Times newspaper in which he criticises the way many UK universities handle allegations of sexual misconduct made against students.
Peter points out that there is no standard way in which universities should handle these complex and sensitive matters.
“I often encounter serious problems with the way universities conduct these investigations, especially in their handling and testing of evidence. It is especially concerning that universities exhibit an inability to properly support the vulnerable parties to a disputed sexual encounter,” he writes.
Although regulator The Office for Students recently demanded all universities have a codified policy on these investigations, it did not provide guidance on how they should properly be run.
“Whitehall should step in to change this“, Peter writes. “Complainants, accused individuals and the wider student population will all benefit from knowing that a disputed sexual encounter will be investigated by universities swiftly and fairly.”
