Hickman & Rose client Rajiv Menon KC has featured in the media following the Court of Appeal’s dismissal of a decision to refer him for contempt of court proceedings, ruling there was no jurisdiction to do so.
Represented by Hickman & Rose’s Jenny Wiltshire and Stefano Ruis instructing Adrian Waterman KC and Anthony Hudson KC, Rajiv Menon KC successfully challenged an attempt to refer him for contempt following his closing speech on behalf of one of the Filton Palestine Action defendants charged with criminal damage.
Hickman & Rose’s Head of Serious and General Crime Jenny Wiltshire was quoted widely in the media saying her client “is delighted that the Court of Appeal has found in his favour”.
She said the decision means “the Filton trial judge did not have the power to refer [Mr Menon KC] directly to the High Court to be prosecuted for contempt of court and that the High Court did not have the power to accept the reference in the absence of an application by the Attorney General in the public interest.”
“Rajiv would like to thank his lawyers and all those who have supported him during this difficult time. He hopes that this is now the end of the matter. This unprecedented attempt to criminalise lawyers for doing their job and representing their clients fearlessly should never be repeated.”
