James Gwatkin

James joined Hickman & Rose in July 2017, where he currently assists Jenny Wiltshire, Aileen Colhoun and Peter Csemiczky in the criminal defence department.

James obtained a BA (hons) in History and Politics from the University of Warwick in 2015, before studying the GDL at the University of Sheffield in 2016.  He was awarded an Exhibition Award from Inner Temple to fund his GDL and BPTC studies, the Irwin Mitchell Award from the University of Sheffield and the Advanced Criminal Practice Award from the University of Law.  He was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in July 2017. 

Prior to joining Hickman & Rose, James volunteered as an Education Advocate for the Communities Empowerment Network (CEN), representing parents and excluded children through written/oral appeals challenging permanent exclusions from school.  James teaches debating and public speaking in prisons across London as a Vocalise Mentor and assists in training future mentors.
