Andrew Malkinson’s solicitor Toby Wilton has been quoted in the media following the release of an independent inquiry into the Criminal Cases Review Commission’s handling of the case.
The review, by Chris Henley KC, was highly critical of the CCRC’s role in the case, in which Mr Malkinson spent 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. The CCRC has apologised.
Toby Wilton, who represents Andrew in the Andrew Malkinson Inquiry and in his claims for compensation, said: “It is vital that the CCRC is held to account for its shocking failures in this case and completely overhauled“.
James Burley, who led APPEAL‘s investigation into the Malkinson case, said: “No one can doubt now that the CCRC is a broken safety net which sets the bar unreasonably high for innocent prisoners trying to clear their names.”
