Head of Civil Litigation Daniel Machover, working with barrister Guy Vassall-Adams KC at Matrix Chambers, acts for Yasmin Sooka, who has secured an important new legal protection for human rights campaigners.
Daniel’s work with Guy secured a Statement in Open Court (SIOC) for Ms Sooka, Executive Director of the International Truth and Justice Project, regarding false information published about her by a former UK representative of the political party of the former Sri Lankan President.
Ms Sooka was permitted to make this statement of fact after bringing a legal action under the Data Protection Act. While Statements in Open Court are common in defamation cases, this is the first time that anyone has been permitted to make one in a data protection action.
The ability to do this provides an important additional layer of legal protection to human rights campaigners subject to disinformation campaigns from powerful individuals and organisations.
