Jenny Wiltshire has been quoted the Times warning of potential injustice in proposed changes to the police’s pre-charge bail and ‘Release under Investigation’ regimes.
Jenny says she welcomes Home Secretary Priti Patel’s reported plan to review RUI, but says she is “particularly worried about the plan to extend the initial period of pre-charge bail imposed by the police from 28 days to 60 or even 90 days; and the related proposal to extend from three months to up to a year the first point at which this bail must be reviewed by a court.”
Jenny adds: “The danger with the government’s proposals is that they would effectively make the pre-charge bail system just as free from external oversight as RUI, with the result that very little changes.”
